I teach a couple of classes every Saturday morning. I usually get up for work, have my morning coffee and breakfast, sit for a bit, and finally mosey to the gym. I like to get there about 30 minutes early so I can go sit in the gym’s sauna.
The sauna seems to be infrequently used at the gyms. I don’t know why but just in case we can talk about why those saunas are not so bad after all. Sure, they’re hot but they’re also quite nice.
- They are very relaxing! I’ve been known to fall asleep in the sauna more than a handful of times so I’m not allowed to lay down when I know I have a time commitment that I cannot sleep through!
- They help to clean out your pores. This is great for me, especially when I have those less than perfect eating weeks and my complexion is suffering. This of course happens through body sweat from the heat in the sauna.
- Muscle relaxation. Yes, more relaxing, but this time it is muscular focused. As the body warms, the tension starts flushing out that we hold throughout our muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
- Workout recovery benefits. It helps to shorten your recovery time after working out. It also helps with muscular aches and pains and removing any building of lactic acid in the muscles.
I’ve also read that because your heart rate increases to produce sweat that there is a calorie burn aspect to it but I’ll personally state that it is probably minor. If not then everyone would be in there ‘working out’ / chilling out.
If it were that easy to burn calories and lose weight we’d all be in there! 😛
